Candidates for admission to the programmes should meet all qualification criteria of the University Graduate School (Please refer to the latest Postgraduate Prospectus). All applicants should submit a research proposal (Guidelines to the Preparation of Research Proposal). Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed as part of the admission process. Academic qualifications, research ability, work experience, references and language abilities will be taken into consideration.

Application Materials

After submitting an online application, applicants must send the following documents to the General Office (please see the bottom of this webpage for the address) before the application deadline. Please write the application number and the name of programme applied on the envelope.

  1. Confidential Recommendations from two referees respectively* (if not via online submission)
  2. Official Transcripts from the University attended by applicants*
  3. Research proposal (guidelines: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/crs/download/MPCUS-RP-Guidelines2015.pdf)
  4. A sample of writings (MPhil: undergraduate term paper/research paper; PhD: Master's thesis/ representative research paper)
  5. Copies of identity card or passport
  6. Original of English proficiency proof (to be sent directly by the examination bodies)
  7. Application fee receipt (if not paid by visa)
  8. Copies of degree certificates

* Official Transcripts and Confidential Recommendation must reach the respective divisions directly from the University and referees, or in sealed envelopes and sent by the applicant with other support documents to the Graduate Division.


Application Deadline

1 Dec 2017 (For applicants who apply for Ph.D. programmes through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme)
31 Jan 2018 (For applicants who apply for M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes directly with CUHK)


Study Period

For M.Phil. programmes, the normative period of study is 24 months for full-time students and 36 months for part-time students. The academic year consists of two terms, starting from September and ending in August of the following year. For PhD programmes, please see the list below. A continuation fee will be charged on those students exceeding the normative period of study.

The study period for Ph.D. porgrammes:

Financial Assistance (Awards of Postgraduate Studentship)

  1. Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) is a form of financial assistance provided to full-time postgraduate students registered in research degree programmes. Holders of such studentship are not employees of the University.
  2. The studentship is available in most Graduate Divisions. Normally, the award of a PGS will be made known to students at the same time as they receive their admission offers. Students need not make a separate application for obtaining the award. The provisional monthly stipend for Postgraduate Studentship is $16,270 for 2017-18.
  3. Students receiving PGS awards are expected to assist in the teaching and research work of the department to which they belong. Their duties will be assigned by the Department Chairperson.
