Abstract:

The exhibition Youhan and Yu Youhan: Yu Youhan's Early Experience and Late Style will present a comprehensive exploration of the renowned artist Yu Youhan (1943-2023). The exhibition will focus on two significant phases of his artistic development: his formative years, marked by the so called “cultural fever” of the 1980s, which sought to merge Western modernism with China's cultural heritage; and his late style, from 2002 to 2019, during which he revisits and incorporates his early influences and his extensive life experiences into his artistic experimentation.

As the first survey exhibition of his oeuvre after his passing in 2023, this presentation will detail the research process by curators that informed the exhibition and discuss how the research findings were translated into a compelling exhibition format. The exhibition will open on March 25, preceding Art Basel Hong Kong week and providing a unique opportunity to engage with Yu Youhan's remarkable legacy.
