Jia TAN is Associate Professor of Cultural Studies in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She was a Clare Hall Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2024), a Global Fellow at the University of St. Andrews (2023), and a Research Fellow at the University of Amsterdam (2023). She received her doctoral degree in critical studies of cinema and television from the University of Southern California. She has taught at the University of Southern California and Hong Kong Baptist University before joining CUHK. She has also worked at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles.
Jia Tan is the author of Digital Masquerade: Feminist Rights and Queer Media in China (New York University Press, 2023). Her research on digital media, feminism, queer culture, and documentary have appeared in Crime, Media, Culture; Critical Studies in Media Communication; GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies; Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, and Journal of Chinese Cinemas. Her research has been funded by Research Grants Council, Social Science Research Council, Harold Lloyd Foundation, and so on. Currently, she serves as an Associate Member for Institute for Transpacific Cultural Research, Simon Fraser University, Canada. She is on the editorial boards of Communication, Culture, and Critique as well as Journal of Chinese Cinemas. She is also one of the founding members of Hong Kong Scholars Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity.
