胡嘉明於美國哥倫比亞大學人類學系畢業，現為香港中文大學文化與宗教學系副教授。
胡嘉明專注研究當代中國的現代性及其文化政治，以及國家與社會關係。

 

她的首部專著
Reinventing Chinese Tradition: Cultural Politics of Late Socialism (University of Illinois Press)，通過分析政府、旅遊資本、知識份子話語、與農民的鄉村建設如何透過重新敘述民間文化而協商角力，探討當代中國民間文化的再現與實踐。

The final destination of the Long March and center of the Chinese Communist Party's red bases, Yan'an acquired mythical status during the Maoist era. Though the city's significance as an emblem of revolutionary heroism has faded, today's Chinese still glorify Yan'an as a sanctuary for ancient cultural traditions.

她的第二本專著《廢品生活：垃圾場上的經濟，社群與空間》透過垃圾圍城的社會文化現象進一步分析中國現代性的發展矛盾。她最新的研究聚焦在城市的志願文化，探討盛世中國的公共文化政治與新型的國家公民關係。
