Dr Chieng Wei Shieng graduated with a PhD in Cultural Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023, and joined the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies as a lecturer in August 2025. She is currently part of an ongoing website database/indexing group project, “Doing Theory in Southeast Asia” (https://doingtheoryseasia.org/), which showcases intellectual and creative works from/about Southeast Asia. She is interested in pursuing the question, "What are Asians thinking?" and to what extent could these kinds of thinking and thoughts be potentials for decolonial options to other ways of doing, thinking and being in today’s world. More specifically, she pursues these potentialities through her research interests, which include thinking about Southeast/Asian knowledges and imaginations of ‘otherwise’ and futurities form the margins that hold space for nonhumans, such as technologies, ghosts, monsters, spirits, plants and animals. She enjoys thinking about these by engaging with visual and popular cultures, including contemporary art, film and literature, music and sounds and whatever that may be considered funny, quirky or strange.
