James D. Frankel,出生及成长於美国纽约,於哥伦比亚大学获得东亚语言与文化系学士学位,及宗教系硕士及博士学位。Frankel教授主要研究范围包括中国伊斯兰教的历史,学术兴趣强调思想历史与宗教和文化合一。他的博士论文考察晚明(1368-1644)清初(1644-1911)中国伊斯兰学术文学,特别考查中国穆斯林文人刘智(约1660-约1730)之著作。 Frankel教授的第一本著作,Rectifying God's Name: Liu Zhi's Confucian Translation of Monotheism and Islamic Law(University of Hawaii Press, 2011),阐述了同一主题。他曾於中国居住,并经常到亚洲和欧洲旅游,认识不少学者和穆斯林少数族群宗教领袖。Frankel教授任教并研究伊斯兰教,比较宗教学,中国哲学与宗教,宗教原教旨主义及神秘主义。
