“Ongoing Nuclear Tragedies: Fukushima X Chernobyl” photography exhibition (2015-03-16)
“Ongoing Nuclear Tragedies: Fukushima X Chernobyl” photography exhibition is co-organized by MA programme in Intercultural Studies, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, CUHK and Hong Kong Society for the Study of Nuclear Radiation. In this exhibition we select representative photographs from Dr. Pierpaolo Mittica’s serial works related to the two major nuclear accidents in our time: Chernobyl: The Hidden Legacy and Fukushima No-Go Zone.
Dr. Pierpaolo Mittica, an award-winning photographer based in Venice, Italy pursues the art of social photography under the guidance and inspiration from his mentors Naomi and Walter Rosenblum. His documentary works, supported by his dedicated understanding of the events, lift the photographic images beyond immediate emotional charge to expose the true nature of the scenes, which are most often the forgotten zones of the underpriviledged suffering in different corners of the world.
From 2002-2007 Dr. Mittica had travelled regularly to Belarus and Ukraine and talked to eminent scientists, local doctors, relief workers and victims in orphanages and hospitals in an effort to reveal the indelible consequences of the Chernobyl catastrope that started 29 years ago. Chernobyl: The Hidden Legacy was selected by the Chernobyl National Museum of Kiev (Ukraine) for the official exhibition for the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
And since 2011, he has been following the Fukushima nuclear accident by going into the "Exclusion Zone" and attesting how people are forced to live with radiation in doses high and low. His powerful works is a reminder to the world that Chernobyl and Fukushima tragedies are not the past but are just the beginning, and deep reflection is urgently needed on the continuing use of nuclear technology.
