What is Public Humanities?

Public Humanities connects with the public and engages with the community.

The BA Programme in Public Humanities at CUHK is a synergy between the critical skills of Cultural Studies and the practical know-how of Cultural Management. We seek to engage diverse publics in community building through cultural activities, encourage the creation of knowledge collectively through innovative curation, and promotes the relevance of humanities to the current conditions of civic and cultural life.

What are our missions and visions?

We recognize how culture nurtures ideas, and how ideas transform culture.

We aim to nurture a new generation of cultural mediators, producers, and professionals to meet the needs and challenges of contemporary society. We also aim to transform cultural practices for better community building.

Our programme fosters students’ critical and creative thinking, deepens their understanding of culture, heritage, and the arts; it also enhances their ability to communicate and collaborate with the public. We are committed to training students in research skills, cultural sensitivity, media literacy, curating, and policy-making, bringing the knowledge and values of the humanities into the cultural life of the general public. We also promote global citizenship and civic participation, and support sustainable development of various cultural enterprises in society.

Are there any internship or community engagement opportunities?

Yes, there are. BA in Public Humanities offers internship programme and courses on community art and curation for students to gain hands-on experience in cultural industry and community engagement. Also, department organizes various alumni sharing and career talks, and Artist-in-residence scheme, so that students could have direct conversation with people working in related fields.

We encourage students to take part in our capstone course CURE4038 Summer Internship. Students will engage themselves in organizations such as non-governmental organizations, media organizations, museums, art institutions, cultural institutions, theatre, etc. Alternatively, students can take part in CUHK’s Co-operative Education Programme (Co-op@CUHK) to fulfil the graduation requirement.
