The background story of PH Times
PH Times is a typeface reimagined by BA Programme in Public Humanities to rediscover and celebrate the humanistic qualities of typography—and the humanities in general. Drawing on the practical, newspaper‑born Times New Roman, PH Times honours scholarly tradition—seen in its bracketed serifs, subtle stroke contrast, and lively italics—while serving as an accessible, contemporary default for a public‑facing humanities programme. It was adopted as a type‑led identity because typography can stay fresh through everyday use in posters, flyers, social posts, and video, sustaining an ongoing sense of interaction and belonging with diverse audiences. The result feels both familiar and new: a dependable workhorse with a hand‑touched rhythm and clarity suited to contemporary public communications. Conceptually, PH Times embodies the programme’s emphasis on participation, communication, and connection, treating the typeface as an evolving communication tool. We invite people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to use it and join us in reflecting on the public and the humanities.
