Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies - Curriculum and Concentrations

Arab Studies

Students may choose to declare a concentration “Arab Studies” by taking the following elective courses in place of “Elective Courses” in BA Religious Studies Major Programme Requirement.

 

Applicable to students admitted in 2024-25

 

(a) 2 courses from the followings: (6 units)

  • CURE 2226 Introduction to Islam
  • CURE 2228 History of the Arab World

(​b) 6 units of language courses:

  • CURE 2180 Arabic for Beginners I OR ARAB 1000 ARABIC I, 
    AND CURE 2181 Arabic for Beginners II; OR
  • ARAB 2050 ARABIC I & II

(c) 4 courses from the followings: (12 units)

  • CURE 3114 Islamic Scriptures: The Qur’an and Traditions of Muhammad
  • CURE 3129 Islam: Religious Tradition and Modern Politics
  • CURE 3376 Religious Fundamentalism and Asian Cultures
  • CURE 3378 Fieldwork in Islamic Culture and Religion
  • CURE 4157 Special Topics in Religious Traditions
  • CURE 4158 Special Topics in Religion, Culture and Society

(d) 3 CURE courses at 2000 or above level from the Religious Studies Areas: (9 units)

  • Except CURE2180 Arabic for Beginners I, and CURE 2181 Arabic for Beginners II
  • Please refer to Religious Studies Major Programme “Course List.”

 

Note:

  1. This concentration is only applicable to students who major in Religious Studies.
  2. ARAB, CURE, EDUC and THEO courses at 2000 and above level as included in the respective concentrations will be included in the calculation of Major GPA for honours classification for students specialize in the relevant concentrations.
